Hello, I'm Uswi, also known as Uswitusqaq. In 2016, I was honored with the Sugpiaq name "Uswitusqaq" during the bi-annual Celebration in Juneau, Alaska. This name was handpicked by my dear friend and mentor, Cutmen along with cherished elders from my community. Uswitusqaq carries the meanings of knowledge, sensibility, and wisdom. Initially, I hesitated to embrace this name, doubting whether I could live up to its coolness. Little did I know that I would later return to Juneau to pursue my studies at UAS, where I would meet the most incredible group of friends.
One of my dearest friends, Justine, once confronted me during a moment of self-doubt. She told me, in her own spirited way, "You need to accept that you are a leader. It is disrespectful to doubt people's belief in you." While her words may not have been exactly as I remember them, the sentiment has stuck with me. Over time, I've grown into the role of "Uswitusqaq," and I am deeply honored to bear such a name.
The nickname "Uswi" originates from my dear friend, Sage, who used the Lingit word "ooski," meaning "cute," to affectionately call me. This evolved into "Uswi," a shortened version of "Uswitusqaq." When I returned to my homelands and began working for my tribe, my coworker, cousin and dear friend, Stevi, also started calling me "Uswi," explaining that it meant "baby" or "crazy" in Sug'stun. I cherished this nickname, as it was filled with love and felt more like me.
Upon moving to Anchorage, my supervisor at the time asked if I would like to go by Uswi or my english name, I gladly chose "Uswi". I've since grown confident in this name, to the point where some people don't even know my english name anymore! I cherish this, as it reflects the desire I have for people to know and remember my name. That's why I decided to name my business "Uswi Designs," a reflection of my identity and a celebration of the name that has become an integral part of who I am and who i am becoming.
